Let’s face it, we all must deal and cope with difficulties at some point in our lives. No one is immune from the challenges that can spring upon us from time to time. However, with resilience we can bounce back from the stress and hardships that come into our lives. Some  setbacks are minor, and others are more devastating, like a divorce, loss of a job, financial losses, natural disasters, illness, or the death of a loved one. Instead of falling into despair or hiding from problems with unhealthy coping strategies, resilient people face life’s difficulties head-on. This does not mean that resilient people do not feel the pain, grief, anxiety other and emotions like anyone else, it is that they have developed the skills, strategies, and tools to handle these difficulties. They rely on their inner resources of strength and mental muscles to find ways to overcome and learn new ways to get stronger.

Some of the characteristics of resilient people are:

  • Holding positive views of themselves and their abilities,
  • Possessing the capacity to make realistic plans and stick to them
  • Having self-discipline
  • Being a good communicator
  • Seeing themselves as a fighter rather than a victim
  • Having high emotional intelligence so they can navigate through their feelings effectively.

Some techniques to override the emotions are deep breathing exercises, seek support from a professional coach or therapist, focus on what you can control, and physical movement of your body.

With practice and consistency anyone can learn to be more resilient. So the next time adversity shows up in your life, you will have the resilience to stay steady and calm no matter what happens.
